Protect confidential files with BoxCryptor on Dropbox

A solution to protect from prying eyes so you may be the use of these programs but must be installed locally on each computer. With Dropbox instead, there is a security service called BoxCryptor used to encrypt files stored on the Internet in Dropbox . BoxCryptor is a program that is installed on your computer Windows , Mac and Linux and is also available as an application for iPhone OS and Android .

After installation, if Dropbox is installed on your system, you will be automatically detected and, in the shared folder, it creates a sub-folder named BoxCryptor. The program creates a virtual disk in the system that you must specify a letter (on Windows becomes visible in My Computer).

In the next step you must provide a password that will be used to encrypt and decrypt data. Finally, click on OK, the installation is completed. Boxcryptor Protecting files is very easy because you only need to move files or folders you want to encrypt and hide inside the disk BoxCryptor which is located in the resources of the computer (not the folder).

As we will see if using Windows, BoxCryptor also appears as the computer disk and that's where the protection is. Once you have copied all the files on your hard BoxCrypt, you can click the program icon in the taskbar (bottom right corner near the clock ) to close the program and do away with the virtual drive hide encrypted files from your computer.

To review the protected files, you must reopen the program and enter the password you set. If you look inside the sub-folder inside Dropbox created by BoxCryptor , you will see some files that are randomly named files when encrypted. Even opening the Dropbox website, these files will be protected with random names and can not be opened or recognize. The files appear normally only Boxcryptor opening the program on your computer in ' virtual drive, obviously written after the specified password.

The files are encrypted in Dropbox and therefore invisible but visible on your computer with Boxcryptor installed. To make effective use of this system of protection should never use the " remember password "that in fact, is to remove the encryption.

Also, do not delete the XML file that is created within Boxcryptor serves as the program to encrypt files and decrypt. In the preferences you can change the position of the protected folder which by default is Boxcryptor inside Dropbox.

Boxcryptor there is a free version and a paid version. The main difference is that with the free account, you can protect up a space of 2GB that can not be sufficient to cover the entire archive synchronized but only the most important files.

This is probably the best way to protect files that are uploaded on the online service Dropbox there so no one can ever see them, open them or edit them.
